Historic Greek Orthodox Church in Liverpool Participated in Annual Heritage Open Day

This year’s Heritage Open Day in the United Kingdom included a Greek Orthodox landmark in the city of Liverpool.

Heritage Open Day is an annual event during which various kinds of historic and often private buildings across the United Kingdom are open to the public. Visitors can experience organized activities and tours over a four day period.

During this year’s event, which lasted from September 10 to September 13, the Greek Orthodox Church of St Nicholas in Toxteth, Liverpool gave an opportunity to the public to visit the 145 year old structure.

“The church was built in 1870. This building is a typical example of Byzantine architecture, having four domes. The famous builder Henry Sumner was commissioned to build the church. The church was dedicated to St. Nicholas, the Patron Saint to all seamen, as the money for the building was raised by the Greek ship owners who were based in Liverpool,” the Heritage Open Day website notes.
