Russia Unlikely to Help Greece

greece_eu_russiaGreece’s close relationship with Russia, or at least its portrayed close relationship, is not likely to earn the crisis-stricken country special treatment anytime soon.

On Tuesday, Andrey Kostin, President and Chairman of the Management Board of the second largest Russian Bank, VTB, said the Greek problem is something that the European Union will have to solve.

“It is a European Union problem. Europe created it and they will have to solve it. I don’t think that Russia is in a position to help,” he said while attending a BRICS conference in Ufa, Russia.

Moreover, Russian Finance Minister Alexey Ulyukayev said that helping Greece is not an issue on this year’s BRICS agenda.

Reuters reported that while Ulyukayev attended the BRICS conference he said that last month there was a one-year extension of the embargo on food imports from countries that had imposed sanctions on Russia as a result of Russia’s intervention in Ukraine.
