Restoration Underway for Historic Greek Consulate in Western Turkey

Greek Consulate IzmirThe restoration process of a historic Greek Consulate building in the Aegean province of Izmir has begun, with Greek government funding.

The historic consulate, which was built in the late 19th century, will be fortified in a restoration that is scheduled to be completed within 400 days.

Turgay Bakır, the master architect responsible for the restoration, expressed contentment over the Greek government’s decision to renovate the historic building, while also advocating action for the unused German Consulate adjoining it.

“It is pleasing that Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras has protected values and funded the restoration of the building in a time of financial crisis. Action should also be taken to save the adjacent German Consulate and the historic building on the other side of the consulate,” said Bakır.

Located in the city’s famous Kordon neighborhood, the historic Greek Consulate had once been among the list of 30 real estates to be sold to help solve the 2012 Greek financial crisis.
