Cambridge Cyclist Sign in Ancient Greek

sign-ancient-GreekThe picture of a warning sign for cyclists in Cambridge, UK, has been circulating the media over the last few days. BBC radio producer Dotty McLeod even tweeted about the strange sign, found outside a house in Portugal Place.

The reason that the notice has drawn so much attention is that it is written in Latin and ancient Greek. However, according to BBC, the picture has drawn some negative criticism since the Greek part of the message appears to have a few mistakes.

“Two-wheels left here will be removed/destroyed” reads the sign according to Selwyn College classics lecturer Dr Rupert Thompson. However, as he pointed out to BBC, there are a few inaccuracies. The term two-wheels is correct, since it’s the best way to describe a bicycle in ancient Greek, but the sign appears to have a few wrong letters while one word carries the opposite meaning than what the creators intended.

The sign, which has also been described as “elitist” by many people on Twitter, can be found on the fence outside a building that was used by the Greek Orthodox Church.
