The city of Cava dei Tirreni in Italy added one more link to the chain connecting it with Greece by naming the Italian Federation of Greek Communities and Brotherhoods president, Jannis Korinthios, an honorary citizen, in recognition of his contribution to the Greek Diaspora.
City mayor Marco Galdi, who is the president of the Philhellenic Society in Italy, became known in Greece when he provided his mayoral allowance to Greece in 2011.
Korinthios noted that he was very happy and excited about this award, and that he plans on continuing his work to promote Greece and Greek culture abroad.
In 1944, Cava dei Tirreni hosted the exiled Greek government of George Papandreou for two months. Greek poet and Nobel laureate George Seferis was part of the delegation as a diplomat and wrote his famous poem “Last Station” during his stay at the Italian city.
Korinthios was born on the Greek island of Tinos and moved to Italy in 1969 to study. He is currently a Modern Greek Studies lecturer at the University of Calabria. He also works as a lexicographer, Diaspora and national revolution historian, school and university textbooks author and a publishing consultant.
He has been an active member in various Greek Diaspora organizations in Italy, while he has also been collaborating with Institute of Philosophical Studies of Naples, Italy, for the last 30 years. In 2010, he was awarded the title of honorary citizen in Montresta Sardinia.
