Norwegian Eurovision Contestant Has Greek Origins

norway-eurovisionNorway’s Eurovision contestant, who will represent the country in Vienna, is a 17-year-old Greek-Norwegian singer, named Ira Konstantinidis. Just a few days before March 14, Konstantinidis confessed that she was rather anxious about the competition.

“I was not stressed until now, but with just a few days left, I feel more and more anxious when I think about singing live in front of thousands of people and more than 1 million viewers who will watch the show on TV,” she told the Athens-Macedonian News Agency.

Konstantinidis was born in Norway to a Greek father and Norwegian mother. “Greece is an important part of me,” she said. Furthermore, she added that even though she may look Greek, her mentality is Norwegian, since she was born and raised there. “I would like to be more like the Greeks, because they are warm and open people,” she said.

Konstantinidis learned to speak Greek thanks to her father, who would only speak in his native language to her and her siblings. The summer vacation in Greece also helped her learn the language and even sing in Greek.

“When I sing in Greek it feels very different from singing in Norwegian and English. English is foreign language to me anyway, but I found that singing in Greek helps me express my inner feelings, something that I cannot do when I sing in Norwegian,” she said.
