‘Salt People’ Tell Story of Greeks in Camargue

Salt People

French film “Salt People (Greece in Camargue),” detailing the lives of Greek salt workers, just got fully funded on French website Touscoprod (akin to Kickstarter).

The film follows the stories and lives of Greeks in Salin-de-Giraud, France, whose ancestors came mostly from the island of Kalymnos to work in the salt fields. It depicts how this small group of Greek Diaspora members struggled economically and tried to establish a small Greek family far from home.

Director Thomas Gayrard noticed that there were no films detailing the lives and struggles of the Greek Diaspora. He wanted to fix this by making a movie that, in his own words, would “give a voice to the men and women who came to the ‘edge of the world'”.

The movie requested 5,000 euros for funding and has already received 6,620 euros on its Touscoprod profile.

The filming has already been completed and the money will go towards music, DVD creation as well as Greek and English subtitles in order to spread the movie beyond France.

Gayrard started the project with his family and it was then taken over by Marseille-based production company Comic Strip to help shoot and distribute the movie.
