Greek Student Falls From Balcony in Rome

ambulanza-roma-708A Greek student who had traveled to Rome, Italy as part of a six-day school trip was rushed to the hospital after falling from a second floor balcony. The girl who came from Imathia, northern Greece is currently undergoing surgery.

The Secondary Education Director in Imathia Anastasia Mavridou stated that “This is a really difficult time. The girl has been hospitalized in critical condition and is currently undergoing surgery. Her parents have already arrived in Rome. However, we don’t know how it all happened yet. Local police are investigating the incident. The rest of the children who were on the trip have returned home.”

The accident occurred on March 4, after dinner, when the children went to their rooms to prepare their bags for their scheduled departure on March 5.

According to Greek media, the young girl was feeling a little under the weather sometime in the afternoon, took a painkiller and went to lie down. Shortly afterwards, she was feeling better and went to a restaurant with her classmates for dinner. She even called her mother to inform her of her condition. When the students were sent to their rooms to prepare their bags, she told her two roommates that she was not feeling very well.

Authorities have not yet determined what happened between that moment and when she was found on the ground after falling from the hotel’s second floor balcony.

Italian police officers, in charge of the investigation, questioned both girls who were staying on the room with the young student, as well as the chaperones and teachers.

“Our thoughts are with the student and her parents. We will investigate under what conditions the accident occurred after talking with all the teachers who were escorting the students,” said the Directorate of Secondary Education president in Imathia, Christos Skoupras.
