One of the most significant Greek modern art pieces, “Dark noon” by Nikos Hadjikyriakos-Ghika, will be auctioned in London on November 25 at Bonhams Greek Art sale. The art piece is estimated at 250,000 to 300,000 GBP and it is part of a large selection of works from 1930s’ Greek artists that will be featured in the auction.

Hadjikyriakos-Ghika was born in 1906 in Athens, Greece. He introduced modernism to the country and was mostly inspired by his studies on ancient Mediterranean civilizations and Byzantine mosaics. He skilfully analyzed his native culture and landscape through his art, creating intense natural light into simple geometric shapes and interlocking planes that form his poetical compositions.

Three of the artist’s major works will be presented in the sale: Dark moon (1959), High Priest (1959) and Hydra (1939).

Furthermore, Bonhams will also include works by Greek artist Yiannis Moralis (1916-2009). Moralis was a master of geometric abstraction and his works are distinguished by compositional structures, poetic schematization of forms and expressive synthesis of recurrent and opposing curves.

The selection of art pieces would not be complete without Georgios Bouzianis’ works. He was a pioneer expressionist and a great painter of the female figure. His work will be represented by two major portraits, Reclining Nude (1958) and Portrait of a Lady (1923).

Finally, Bonhams is also auctioning three paintings by Thanos Tsingos (1914-1965): Cannes painted in 1959, Chrysanthemums on black background from 1960 and the undated Flowers in pink background.
