“Electra” of Sophocles Takes London by Storm

electraIn the wake of dazzling performances of Sophocles‘ “Electra” at the Old Vic in London and the “Medea” of Euripides at the UK’s National Theatre, the “Guardian” recently lauded the revival of Greek drama in London. “I suspect it’s partly because these old plays chime with our own experience of war and revenge killings,” reads the article.

“Electra,” directed by Ian Rickson, will remain at the Old Vic until December 20. Celebrated actress Kristin Scott Thomas, who plays the protagonist and the play’s namesake, has been praised for her stunning performance. The “Telegraph” describes the play as “a kill-for-a-ticket triumph.”

Scott Thomas, as elegant and refined as her “Four Weddings and a Funeral” performance, plays a fragile but powerful woman who appears ill, sleep-deprived. The “Guardian” finds that her performance “lends the role colour and variety.”

Although Scott Thomas dominates the play, Rickson’s production gives balanced treatment to the characters of Clytemnestra – a woman driven not by lust, but by lust for justice – and Orestes, a naive, innocent youth.

The tragedy is centered on the ancient myth of Electra – namely, the vengeance that she and her brother Orestes take on their mother Clytemnestra and stepfather Aegisthus for the murder of their father, Agamemnon.
