A new graffiti artwork by street artist and activist Banksy in Kent, United Kingdom has something of a Greek undertone. The new mural was first seen on Sunday evening in Payers Park. The artist confirmed it was his work by posting it on his website.
The piece, called “Art Buff,” depicts an older woman wearing headphones, her hands clasped behind her back, staring at an ancient Greek column which has been ravaged by time.
The artist has wisely placed a plastic sheeting over “Art Buff”; a number of his stencils have been recently removed by third parties and sold at auctions. Moreover, local authorities are working with the building’s owners to ensure that the mural remains undamaged. A guard has been hired to watch the artwork.
Banksy uses a distinctive stencilling technique to create satirical works that comment on the current social and political situation. His works are found in streets, walls, and bridges, mostly in London, but also in cities outside the UK.
Banksy does not sell photographs or reproductions of his street art. Art auctioneers have been known, however, to sell his street art on location and leave the issue of its removal in the hands of the highest bidder.
