Russia Imposes One-Year Ban on Food Imports from West

Greek_fruitThe Russian government has imposed a ban on most food imports from the United States, the European Union and other Western nations in apparent retaliation for their sanctions against Moscow over the Ukraine conflict.

Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev announced the sanctions Thursday in Moscow. The import ban includes meat, fruit, vegetables and milk and dairy products. Food products from Canada, Australia, Norway and Greece are also included in the ban.

Medvedev’s announcement comes just hours after President Vladimir Putin signed a decree banning some food imports from Europe and the United States. The prime minister said the import ban will last one full year. Analysts say the decree carries potential risks for Russian consumers in a country that relies heavily on food imports.

Medvedev also said Moscow is considering banning Western airliners from flying through Russian airspace on flights to and from the Asia-Pacific region.
