British children interested in history will have the chance to be archaeologists for one day at the Festival of Archaeology which is held from July 12 to 27.
The 2014 Festival fronted by historian Dan Snow, includes more than 1,000 events taking place across the country.
“Archaeology gives us a tangible connection with our past, telling us not just about how our prehistoric ancestors lived millions of years ago, but what everyday life was like for our families in the Industrial Revolution or during Britain’s First World War Home Front,” says Snow.
This year’s festival will have a scent of Greece as the Ure Museum of Greek Archaeology, based at the University of Reading, will participate in the Festival, presenting a Young Archaeologists and Greek Pots day on Saturday, July 19, from 2pm to 4pm.
Visitors will be able to handle 2,500-year-old artifacts and create their own stop motion animation to bring the pictures on Greek pots to life. A trail to follow, with clues on ancient papyrus, will lead participants to where secret pots are hidden.
The event is suitable for ages 6+ and will also be held on Saturday, July 26, from 2pm to 4pm. For more details on the festival, visit www.archaeologyfestival.org.uk/whatson
