Juncker Elected as New EU Commission President

Jean-Claude JunckerAP – The European Parliament has elected former Luxembourg Prime Minister Jean-Claude Juncker as the new leader of the 28-nation bloc’s executive arm.
Lawmakers in Strasbourg on Tuesday voted 422-250 for the 59-year-old who will take over as European Commission President in November from the incumbent, Jose Manuel Barroso of Portugal. The results were announced by the parliament’s president, Martin Schulz.
The powerful Brussels-based Commission is in charge of drafting EU legislation, overseeing countries’ budgets, policing the EU free trade area and enforcing antitrust action.
Juncker says he will use his 5-year-term to promote policies fostering growth and reducing rampant unemployment in Europe.

‘I am proud that Greece is still a eurozone member,’ Juncker says
-Jean-Claude Juncker, candidate for the presidency of the European Commission, on Tuesday said he was proud that Greece was still a eurozone member state.
Speaking at the European Parliament plenary, Juncker referred to the “Cassandras” and speculators who had bet on the breakup of the eurozone, after the outbreak of the debt crisis in Europe.
“We managed to repair a flying plane that was burning,” Juncker said underlining the successful way of dealing with the crisis.
Everybody, he said, was certain about Greece’s exit from the euro and the eurozone. We did everything we could and “I am personally proud that Greece, this great nation, this wonderful people, is still a member of the eurozone,” he concluded.
