Germany Honors Greek Radiologists

doctorThe 20th Annual Meeting of the German Society for Radiation Oncology (DEGRO) which was held July 3 to 6 in Düsseldorf, Germany, was attended by the elite of German radiologists and three Greek doctors who were awarded for their contribution to the treatment of cancer.

Dr Nikolaos Zamboglou, professor and director at the Radiation and Oncology Clinic of Offenbach and Dimos Baltas, professor and director at the Department of Medical Physics and Engineering of the University Hospital of Goethe University in Frankfurt were awarded for their contribution in the field of radiotherapy. They both work for more than four decades in the German health system.

Vasileios Askoxylakis, from Crete, Greece, lecturer at the Department of Radiation Oncology in the University of Heidelberg received the emerging scientist award. Askoxylakis said that the award was a great honor but also a motivation for further and more intensive work. He said that he felt deeply moved as he was awarded along with Zamboglou and Baltas who are role models for younger scientists. Askoxylakis has been granted a research fellowship by the German Research Foundation and is currently in Massachusetts, U.S.A.

The method of radiation therapy that Zamboglou and Baltas have developed is the following: the “heart” of the cancer is irradiated thanks to a cluster of needles-catheters through which radiation attacks the offensive, “bad,” cells leaving the “good” ones intact. This method increases the therapeutic benefits of the radiation therapy while it reduces any side effects.
