Parthenon Marbles Moved from British Museum

elgin marblesThe British Museum has disproved its main argument for keeping the Parthenon Marbles, which was that visitors are able to see the ancient Greek sculptures for free. In fact, they are planning on separating the sculpture collection so that it will be easier to move to a new location.

According to British newspaper The Telegraph, “for those who believe the treasures should be returned to Greece, they are not going very far.” They are going to be part of a spring 2015 exhibition in the new Sainsbury Exhibitions Gallery, where visitors have to pay admission.

This violates one of the conditions of the Turner Bequest under which the British Museum operates, which states that there will be no fee for the permanent exhibition. Meanwhile, archeologists are arguing that according to archaeological ethics, the marbles cannot be presented in fractions, only as a whole.

The Parthenon Marbles, which have not been moved from their spot in the museum’s Duveen Galleries since 1962, have been the center of a diplomatic controversy since Lord Elgin stole them from Greece in the early 19th century. More recently, however, actors Bill Murray and George Clooney claimed that the marbles have “had a very nice stay” in London but it is “probably a good idea if they found their way back” to Greece.

The 2015 exhibition will include several art pieces from the museum’s permanent collection, as well as some loans from other museums around the world. The exhibition will examine “the Greek body beautiful.”

“The ancient Greeks invented the idea of the human body in art as an object of beauty and bearer of meaning. The exhibition will be a new look at the Greek body in art and thought and its connections with other world cultures,” said the museum’s representative.
