7 out of 10 Jobs in Greece Are Temporary

jobsAccording to the European Commission‘s annual report on employment, the young unemployed in Greece stand little chance at finding a job.

The report shows that the fragile economic growth does not generate stable jobs while young Greek people and especially the unskilled are facing a problematic situation. The worst workplaces are recorded in Greece, Spain, and Slovakia.

In these three countries, the intakes reduced by half in 2012 compared to 2008, while 7 out of 10 jobs are  temporary. The report shows that the unskilled workers are having a serious problem in finding a job while highly trained individuals especially in the areas of health services and information have more chances at finding employment.

In 2012, the intakes of employees with fixed-term contracts increased significantly, reaching a EU average of 70%. In Greece, where this type of employment was not common, fixed-term contracts have reached the level of the EU average, while in Spain their percentage stands at 90%, in Slovenia at 89%, and in France at 88 %. The largest drop in intakes of young people aged 15 to 29 was recorded in Greece, Spain, and Slovenia, reaching 45%.

The report ranks EU members states in three categories according to the extent they were affected by the crisis. The first group includes countries that experienced the most severe recession, ie Greece, Spain, and Portugal, where young people are forced to accept jobs with low salary and little or no career advancement.

In countries of southern Europe and especially Greece, there was a sharp decline of 25% in intakes while there was a large drop in low-skill employment between 2011 and 2012. In the field of construction, the fall in employment reached 50% in Greece, Spain, and Lithuania.
