Greeks Eligible for German Pension

Greeks Eligible for German PensionMany Greeks who worked in Germany and previously did not meet the criteria, can now apply to receive a pension from the German state.

Members of “Hellenic Silvestars Association” stated that the main difference in the German system today, is that the child raising period, concerning children born by 1992, has grown from one to two years. This extra year can be counted as a part of the five insurance years required to receive a pension from the German state.

“Hellenic Silvestars” President, Giorgos Papadopoulos, underlines that new data come out for people who live in Greece and have no access to earnings and entitlements from the German State because they live far away and they receive poor information about the changes. He also notes that “Many people have been denied their right to receive pension, while others didn’t even apply due to the discouraging data.”

The amendment of the relevant Law refers to:

People who returned to Greece before 1981 after taking back their insurance contribution to the German State. They weren’t eligible for pension then because Greece wasn’t part of the European Union.

Those who had a child born by 1992, worked in Germany for three years and never worked again or were insured in Greece.

Women, wives or family members, totally dependent on the husband’s income, with few insurance years and one or two children born by 1992.

All the beneficiaries can apply to the German Pension Institution so as to secure their right to receive a pension. The deadline ends on July 1.

Mr. Papadopoulos finally notes, that the changes will also affect Greeks who live in Greece and already receive a pension from the German State. Their pension will increase without a special application from their part. Those who will see their monthly pension increasing, are people with disabilities and people who have children born by 1992. It is noted that people who have children born from 1993 onwards, are entitled to three qualifying insurance years.
