Documentary on Istanbul’s Cultural Heritage at Sismanoglio Megaro

istanbulThe documentary “Our Islands: Through the Eyes of a Musician” by the Turkish director and musician Nedim Hazar will be presented on Saturday, May 10 at the Greek Consulate‘s Sismanoglio Megaro in Taksim square in Istanbul.

The 82-minute documentary is described as a reminder of Istanbul’s fading cultural heritage through the personal lives of different people  who live on Istanbul’s Princes’ Islands. It will be presented at the consulate on Saturday in two separate screenings.

The documentary, filmed on the Prince Islands in 2013, presents the lives of the islanders — including artists, fishermen, philosophers, horse-drawn carriage drivers and housewives — who are deeply bonded with the past and have strong ideas about the present and the future.

The documentary includes the story of the actress Ellen Balkan who has come to the Island’s for a master’s degree in architecture. The place is ideal for her studies as it has interesting architectural sites.

According to the press release, “Music Coordinator, Geo Schaller, and musicians Vassiliki Papageorgiou and Taner Öngür weave an enchanting musical thread throughout the documentary, a paean to their beloved Prince Islands, that culminates in the closing song: “My heart is only for you and the islands/There is no one else.”

The film is narrated both in Turkish and Greek. The first screening will be held at 6:30 p.m. and will be subtitled in English, while the second at 8 p.m. will be shown with Turkish subtitles. Admission is free.
