Greeks Give Grim Feedback on Working Conditions – EU Survey

workEurobarometer data released Thursday showed that 88% of Greeks believe their working conditions have deteriorated over the past five years, way above the European average of 57% and the highest proportion in the EU.

When asked the question “do you think that during the last five years working conditions in your country have worsened?” 88% of Greeks answered positively (57% in the EU), while only 8% say that working conditions have remained the same (27% in the EU).

After Greece, the highest rates of work condition deterioration were reported in Italy (86%), Slovenia (84%) and Portugal (78%).

The poll explores the ways in which the crisis has affected the quality of working conditions in the EU. In Greece 82% of people believe that the country’s working conditions are “poor” (43% in the EU), while only 16% think they are actually “good”, the lowest proportion in the EU, where the average was 53%.

Greece is the only country in the EU where fewer than half of workers are satisfied with the country’s working conditions.

When asked if they were satisfied with their current working conditions, 62% of Greeks answered negatively (23% in the EU) and 38% answered positively (77% in the EU).

As far as working hours are concerned, 63% of Greek respondents appeared satisfied (80% in the EU), while 36% of Greeks expressed their dissatisfaction (19% in the EU).

Finally, 53% of people say that employees are not properly informed about health and safety at the workplace (22% in the EU), while 51% say measures have not been taken to prevent health problems or accidents at work (37% in the EU) and 76% say the workplace fails to cater for older employees (62% in the EU).
