Under the slogan “We are the other Europe. Everything else is Troika”, the “Another Europe with Tsipras” campaign for the forthcoming European elections got underway in Rome on Wednesday.
According to Greek news, Alexis Tsipras’ candidacy for President of the European Commission has been endorsed by 220,000 signatories, ensuring his participation in the May ballot.
Several keynote speakers addressed the audience in Testasio, Rome, including Nichi Vendola, general secretary of the “Left Ecology Freedom” party, and the author and journalist Barbara Spinelli, who is one of Tsipras biggest supporters in Italy.
“We must first redefine Europe in order to succeed in redefining the left,” said Vendola, according to whom “Alexis Tsipras can bring a new, deeper meaning to the European Left.”
Vendola also stressed that “the European social democracy is responsible for approving Troika’s impositions that dared to even think of a Europe without Greece, the country that is the cradle of our continent.”
Furthermore, Barbara Spinelli highlighted that Italian supporters of ‘Another Europe with Tsipras’ want to show that “anger and criticism can be turned into positive actions, in order to rebuild Europe.”
A well-known columnist in Italian daily newspaper La Repubblica, Spinelli made it clear that “the list is aimed mainly to left voters, but not limited to them. It is directed to all citizens who want to transform Europe to a real union.”
