Greek Sale Earns 2.1 Million Pounds Sterling

paintingThe annual auction “Greek Sale,” that was held on April 9 and organized by Bonhams in London earned over 2.1 million pounds sterling. The auction included some of the most important works of famous Greek painters such as Constantinos Parthenis, Nikos Engonopoulos, Theofilos Hadjimichail, Yiannis Moralis, Thanos Tsingos, and Nikos Hadjikyriakos-Ghika.

The highlight of this year’s Greek sale was the painting “Prayer in the Mount of Olives,” by Constantinos Parthenis that was sold for 422,500 pounds sterling (510,759 euros) while it was initially estimated at 360,000 to 600,000 euros. The “Girl going into the sea” by Yiannis Moralis was sold for 98,500 pounds sterling (119,076 euros). Its initial estimation was at 96,000 to 140,000 euros.

Bonhams organizes two Greek painting auctions each year, including works by Greek artists of previous centuries as well as the contemporary era. This year’s auction included many Greek masterpieces such as “Scholiastes d’ un texte futur” (Commentators of a future text) by Nikos Engonopoulos, “The lion hunt” by Theofilos Hadjimichail and “Midday” by Nikos Hadjikyriakos-Ghika.
