The documentary “Kismet” by Nina-Maria Paschalidou and the feature film “Luton” by Michalis Konstantatos will represent Greece at the 18th International Film Festival in Sofia, that takes place from March 6 to 23.

Kismet is a documentary about the unprecedented success of Turkish soap operas and their impact on the Middle East, North Africa, the Balkans and Asia. It examines how these shows have strengthened the debate about women’s rights across these areas. It was first presented at the International Documentary Film Festival of Amsterdam (IDFA) which is the world’s largest and most important documentary film festival. In Sofia, Kismet is competing in the Documentary section of the Festival. In Greece it will debut in theaters from March 27.

Luton, the first feature film by Michalis Konstantatos, will compete in the Balkan Competition section. The film presents the lives of three different people. Jimmy, a wealthy high school student,  Mary, a trainee lawyer aged about 30 and Makis, the 50-year-old owner of a convenience store, are trying to escape their conventional lives. According to the director it is a film that talks about “the illusion of normality, the suspiciously ‘innocent’ routine, strange behaviors that can’t be explained.” Luton has also participated in the Stockholm International Film Festival and the BFI London Film Festival.
