Greek Scientists Study Shipwrecks and Ancient Settlements

seabedIt appears that despite the financial crisis that has hit Greece since 2008, the fields of technology and innovation are growing and that the country can compete with other technologically advanced countries.

The Research Executive Agency of the European Commission (supreme body of the European Union) has chosen a group of Greek scientists to lead a European consortium that will carry out a space technology research project. The Greek scientists, members of the company Planetek Hellas, intend to examine the application of modern earth observation technologies to the tracking of shipwrecks and submerged ancient settlements. The consortium consists of eleven European research organizations from countries such as Portugal, Belgium, Italy, England, Denmark and Greece.

The Greek scientific group will have 30 months at its disposal to examine hundreds of satellites orbiting the Earth and to assess which of them can accurately record the seabed at a depth that reaches 50 meters.

The director and co-founder of Planetek Hellas stated that the company invests in the multitalented research potential of Greece and that he believes that innovation and extroversion are the most efficient “antibiotics” against the crisis that ravages the country.

The project will be held under the auspices and funding of the European Space Agency.
