Germany: Problems With Greek Language Education

schoolThe Greek Confederation of Parents and Guardians in Germany expressed its frustration and resentment concerning the developments on Greek language education in Germany in an open letter to the Minister of Education.

The Confederation stressed that school staffing is moving really slowly and added that every teacher transfer requires the signature of the Minister of Education, which delays the process for several months.

Furthermore, it states that the Ministry of Education is constantly ignoring all proposals concerning the establishment of Greek expatriates as teachers in order to contribute to the Greek language education in Germany.

The Greek Confederation of Parents and Guardians also notes that the Ministry of Education has yet to introduce remedial teaching, especially in German high schools which in the last two years have accepted many students who migrated with their parents. Those students are now forced to pay for tutors in order to keep up.

“We wonder, what is the State’s policy concerning the Greek diaspora, especially when the current policies are designed, implemented and enforced without the cooperation, participation and acceptance of the diaspora, itself,” said the letter.

It is worth noting that last year, the bodies of the Greek diaspora in Germany, had warned the government about the many deficiencies in the Greek language educational system, but their appeals fell short.
