88% of British Support the Return of Parthenon Marbles

pathenon marblesA recent voting conducted by the British newspaper “The Guardian” showed that 88% of the respondents believes that Britain should return the Parthenon marbles to Greece, while only 12% disagree with their return.

The voting was launched after George Clooney’s statements supporting the return of Parthenon marbles, during the press conference for his new film “The Monuments Men,” at the Berlin film festival. “Maybe it wouldn’t be a bad thing if they were returned. I think that’s a good idea. I think that would be a very fair and very nice thing,” stated the famous actor.

In response to this statement, John Whittingdale, the chairman of the Culture, Media and Sport Committee claimed that the actor is an American who doesn’t know what he is talking about. Commenting on the reactions he caused, Clooney stated that he had no intention to create such fuss. “I did a little research just to make sure I wasn’t completely out of my mind,” he stated. “Even in England the polling is in favor of returning the marbles,” he added.

Other Hollywood stars such as Matt Damon commented on Whittingdale’s statement, saying: “That can’t always be the British default position. I mean seriously, it’s not actually an argument to say we are Americans we don’t get it.”  Bill Murray noted sarcastically, “I think the marbles had a very nice stay here, certainly. London’s gotten crowded, there’s plenty of room back there in Greece, plenty of room.”
