Collection of Rhodes Artifacts in Louvre

rohdes exhibitionAn exhibition is being organized by the Louvre Museum that plans to bring together all the unique artifacts found during excavations on the Greek island of Rhodes and are now scattered in different European museums.

The major temporary exhibition will be entitled “Rhodes: a Greek island and passage to the East. From the Late Bronze Age to the Archaic Period” and will include findings of excavations in the island of Rhodes during the 19th century. These findings were legally or illegally transferred to museums such as the British Museum, the Louvre Museum, the National Museum of Denmark and the National Museums in Berlin.

The exhibition aims to present Rhodes as a passage to and from the East and to stress its role in shaping Greek art and culture from the late prehistoric to early historic times.

“It’s a great opportunity to reunite all of these findings from the island that has offered a great deal to museums throughout Europe,” said Professor Nikos Stambolidis.

The first section of the exhibition will be entitled “History of the excavations in Rhodes, a European History” and it will refer to excavations organized by Greeks or foreigners from the 19th century until today.

The second section will be entitled “Rhodes a site for exchanges in Eastern Mediterranean” and will exemplify the important role that Rhodes played due to its geographical position, in the assimilation of traits from great civilizations of the Near East which influenced Greek culture.

Finally, the third section is dedicated to Rhodian pottery workshops and the known archaic pottery styles that were developed on the island.

The exhibition was organized by the Louvre Museum, also in charge of expenses. It will be available to the public from October 15, 2014 to March 10, 2015. There is a possibility that the exhibition will then travel to Greece.
