A Students View of Life on the Greek Islands

Greek islandsAlice Copperwheat, A former Diss High School student is praising her experience on her placement year in Greece while completing her degree in zoology.

The young woman is currently studying at the University of Manchester. She is on placement, since the beginning of September, at Archipelagos, the Institute of Marine Conservation in the beautiful Greek island of Samos, in the North Eastern Aegean.

Cooperwheat in her interview with the Diss High school newspaper, Diss express, talked about her experience in Greece and the beauties of the country. “It has been really good – it has been a brilliant experience,” she said. Although she was depressed the first weeks in Greece being away from her family, she soon became accustomed. “When I first got there it was quite a shock being away from home. It is nice being at home, but once you are there for a week you get used to it.”

During her stay in the Greek island of Samos and the smaller island of Ouinousses she carried out several activities such as chameleon nightwalks, turtle and a jackal dissections, sampling, and carrying out research.

Commenting on her experience she said: “I would say it has been a real eye opener and it has taught me so much,” she added. “I have learned so much about myself. It has been tough at some points but it has been really rewarding. I would recommend a placement because you see so much more than just staying at university.”
