Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung to Greece : ‘Kalimera, Kalinichta’

“Kalimera, Kalinichta” is the front-page title of the German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung and refers to the Greece’s European Presidency. The sarcastic comment over Greece is paired with a photo of Ansel Feuerbacht’s painting that depicts the scene in Plato’s Symposium in which a drunken Alcibiades, accompanied by a band of revelers, enters the house of the poet Agathon.

“During Greece’s Presidency, there may not be organized rich and luxurious symposiums like the one of the picture, but this doesn’t mean that we must be sarcastic towards Greeks as Churchill was towards Attlee. Churchill quoted to Attlee: ‘Mr. Attlee is a very modest man. Indeed he had a lot to be modest about’,” says the newspaper.

The author of the article continued, “it is uncertain if Greece’s presidency will give to Greeks their lost identity back, or whether it will boost their self-esteem or make them proud, as Soible stated. Surely Greeks can be proud about their glorious historical past, a past when a drunken Alciabiades could give an interesting speech.”

In the same newspaper, there is another report concerning Greece. In particular, this report is talking about the relationship between Germany and Greece and mentions that, in fact, it is not on good terms. The reason behind this report was the recent attack against the German ambassador in Athens.

Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung observes also that, “The officials of both countries must show that they are on good terms with each other. But this is a lie as Greeks hate Germans,” the report continues.
