Ultra Nationalists in Turkey Want Hagia Sophia to be a Mosque

agia_sofiaGiousouf Halatzoglou, MP of the Turkish ultra nationalist party National Movement, submitted a draft law to Turkish National Assembly that proposes to turn Hagia Sophia into a Mosque. Giousouf Halatzoglou is well-known for his relations with the Turkish far right group “Grey Wolves.” Hagia Sophia was operating as a Mosque until 1934 when the Turkish government decided to turn it to a museum. This is an invalid decision states Giousouf Halatzoglou as it was not published in the Government Gazette.

“According to today’s Institution and the one of 1924, any new laws and decisions in order to have sufficient legal power must be approved by the President of Turkish Republic and then published into the Government Gazette. This legal procedure was not followed and as a result the 1924’s decision is illegal.

Lately, there are many fanatic followers of Islam and ultra nationalists in Turkey putting pressure on Erdogan’s Government in order for Hagia Sophia to once again operate as a Mosque. Kemal Ataturk was the one who turned the historical monument of Christianity from a Mosque into a museum.
