Cyprus: CTFA to Unite with CFA

BC155C165578CB4125177E0A11B61246Cyprus Turkish Football Association (CTFA) will unite with [Greek] Cyprus Football Association (CFA).

Football officials in Greek Cyprus have agreed on a provisional deal aimed to unite the island’s two football bodies after separating almost 40 years ago. The deal was sealed in Zurich by the two associations and both sides hope that will drive island’s football forward.

The Turkish Cyprus Football Association (TCFA) will be embodied to Cyprus Football Association (CFA), according to regulations and the charter of the CFA. The CFA will be responsible from now on to organize, control and manage both football activities in Cyprus, and the participation of Cyprus in International competitions.

Moreover, the Cyprus Football Association will still be a member of FIFA and UEFA, and responsible for all football activities. It will be in other words the body responsible for organizing all domestic competitions, and the participation of the Island teams’ in international competitions.

However, the deal must be approved first by both Associations general assemblies.

“With today’s deal, both the Cyprus Football Association and the Cyprus Turkish Football Association are today providing the whole world with an excellent example of how football can build bridges and bring people together after a long period of conflict” said Sepp Blatter, FIFA’s president.

In addition Michel Platini, UEFA’s president underlined that “this deal is something wonderful. I welcome both sides for their courage and determination. As UEFA’s president I am happy for what happened today.”
