The German market is the first European market in Greek feta cheese exports. In value terms, the German market absorbed throughout the period of six years, 2007-2012, one third of exports of feta cheese, while in terms of quantity, the share of the German market among the countries of feta exporting destinations is slightly higher – about 36% in 2012.
In fact, according to Antigone Marioli, Secretary of Finance and Commercial Affairs in Düsseldorf, in 2012 the exports of feta cheese to Germany exceeded 12,000 tons, while the total feta exports are about 35,000 tons. In value terms, the exports of feta to Germany reached 70 million euros, while the total exports are worth 202 million euros.
The exporting process to Germany fluctuated in the period 2007-2012 regarding the export quantity and regarding the value there was a rise throughout this period.
It is noteworthy that compared to the other four main countries of feta exports, the UK, Italy, Sweden and the USA , the average export price of feta cheese to Germany remains the lowest . It should be noted that Germany is the market with the clearest increase concerning the average value of exports.
