Tsipras’ Visit to Germany

Greece’s program of reforms has brought results, the member of the executive board of the European Central Bank (ECB) Jörg Asmussen stated after his meeting in Frankfurt, Germany, with the leader of Coalition of the Radical Left (SYRIZA) Alexis Tsipras.

Asmussen said that Greece has made progress towards achieving a primary surplus in 2013, described as “positive and encouraging” the data announced by the Greek Finance Minister Yannis Stournaras for the Greek economy and asked Tsipras’ support to the program that is being implemented in the country.

“In our opinion, the program brings results, we see progress,” Asmussen stated characteristically. However, he described as unacceptable the high rates of unemployment in Greece and noted that the ECB “does not turn a blind eye to social injustice.”

In their common statements with Tsipras after their meeting, Asmussen spoke of a contact in the framework of “The ECB’s normal dialogue” with the opposition leaders of the Eurozone countries.

On his part, Tsipras described the Greek debt as unsustainable and stressed that “instead of decreasing, the debt is increasing.”

The German economist referring to the murder of Pavlos Fyssas stressed that the ECB condemns these kind of actions and added that, “We, at ECB are not blind regarding the social situation in Greece.”

Tsipras visited Germany on Sept. 19 after an invitation extended by the democratic socialist German political party Die Linke on the occasion of the German general elections that are to take place on September 22.

Tsipras will talk at a Die Linke gathering on Sept. 20, and will visit Austria where he will hold a meeting with the leader of the Communist Party, Mirko Messner as well as with Maria Vassilakou, vice mayor of Vienna.
