Qatar Emir’s Odyssey to Ithaca

ITHAKI_533_355The Austrian newspaper Wiener Zeitung published an extended article on  the prospects that arise as well as the benefits that Ithaca is about to enjoy from the purchase of the neighboring small uninhabited islands from Qatar’s Emir, under the title Thousand and one nights in Ithaca.

As highlighted, Qatar’s Emir millions will help Odysseus ‘ home to emerge from the crisis.

Six of the green, rocky islands were inherited to the three brothers and sisters Dionisis, Coralia and Theodora Griva, with the two sisters recently having sold five of the islands to the Emir of Qatar for a few million.

According to the Mayor of Ithaca, Yiannis Kassianos, the Emir wants to turn Oxia into an island of art with scattered pieces of contemporary art throughout the island, something that until now has only been done on an island in Japan. The Emir’s intentions in fact mean that the 3,500 residents of Ithaca are to benefit from at least half of his investment from workers and other staff.

The article also includes a map and information on Ithaca and gives a description of the current state of the Greek economy and its gloomy estimates of the huge unemployment rates in Greece.
