More Greeks Migrate to Austria in 2012

Vienna_AustriaA total of 1,201 Greeks arrived and settled in Austria in 2012, while the same period 565 Greek citizens left the country, according to new data released by the National Statistical Office in Austria.

A recent report of the Office, for non-Austrian citizens seeking jobs in the country, noted an increase of the number of Greeks and particularly 15 percent during the previous year, compared to 2011.

The Austrian Statistical Office’s report noted an increase of the number of Greeks seeking a job in Austria in October 2012, during July 2011- July 2012, up to 37 percent, more than double of the one recorded for the whole year 2012.

In absolute numbers, the number of Greeks that are officially in Austria seeking a job, during this period, was very small and was up to 156 individuals.

According to the new data, migration to Austria in general in 2012, noted an increase of 40 percent in relation to 2011 and a total of 140,400 foreign citizens settled in the country, while 96,600 left abroad.

From this difference, which results from additional settlements in Austria, 31,500 individuals (62 percent) are citizens of the EU and of those, the biggest group (6,600 individuals) were Hungarians, Germans (6,200) and Romanians (5,400).

According to the Austrian Statistical Office, a total of 400,000 citizens coming from the other 26 countries of the European Union and Switzerland lived in Austria in 2012, 8,5 percent more than in 2011, with 153,000 of those coming from Germany.
