Russia Mulls Greek Meat Import Ban

h_50710420.jpg.1000x297x1Russia is considering banning meat imports from 50 Greek companies starting July 15. The ban was authorized after Russian veterinary experts inspected several facilities that revealed violations of inspection rules.

After that, several telephone talks followed between the head of the Russian veterinary watchdog Rosselkhoznadzor and Greece’s Chief Veterinarian Panayiotis Triantafyllou.

A spokesperson for Rosselkhoznadzor, Alexei Alekseyenko, told Interfax that “Russian experts established that some exporters do not abide by the Customs Union standards,” adding that imports of finished milk products from 27 companies and meat from 16 will be banned starting July 15.

Greece must check all companies that export products to Russia and to the other Customs Union member-countries so as to meet with importers’ requirements, and prepare the companies for Russian inspections, Rosselkhoznadzor said. The Russian veterinary and phytosanitary oversight service highlighted it no longer trusted the Greek authorities to monitor the situation.

Greek veterinary officials stressed that two seminars are to be organized for exporters on Russia’s and the Customs Union’s standards.
They said they would like to meet as well with Rosselkhoznadzor officials in Moscow to discuss the details.
