EU Puts Off FYROM Accession Talk

2013-03-24T142000Z_741389011_GM1E93O1PDZ01_RTRMADP_3_MACEDONIA.JPG_b2The European Union’s General Affairs Council, which will meet on June 25, won’t take any decision concerning the opening of accession negotiations with the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM), according to a relevant statement of a European source, Agence Europe reported.

Tne news agency reported that the European Commission has completed its report for the FYROM, as requested in the Council’s conclusions of last December, but said that, “The Council’s opinion is that the time is not appropriate in order to proceed beyond the positions that have already been expressed”.

It added: “There will be no conclusions on FYROM,” noting that “the issue could be raised again in the Council meeting which will be held in the autumn”.

The report added that a series of events in the country are “cause of concern.” Although there has been an improvement, the questions concerning the implementation of the measures decided and the “bilateral issues” with Greece and Bulgaria do not allow the Council to take positive action, it was said.
