Hahn Says ERT Closing No Blow To Democracy

220px-JohannesHahnPortrait“Freedom of speech in Greece in not threatened by the closure of ERT,” Johannes Hahn, European Commissioner for Regional Policy stated, making it clear though that the Troika had not requested the closure of Greece’s state-owned public radio and television broadcasting corporation.

Hahn, who was in Athens on June 12, the next day of the shutdown of ERT, and on the 13th for an official visit, added that the Troika had not asked from Greece to close ERT, but had only pointed out that Greece had to reduce work positions in the public sector, and the decision in which services dismissals would take place was entirely up to the Greek government.

Concerning investments, Hahn estimates that the shutdown of ERT “does not help,” as it brought upheaval in the country.

His press officer, Annemarie Huber, completed the Commissioner’s statements by saying that the closure of ERT was “of course unacceptable.”

Finally, referring to Greece’s condition, Hahn mentioned that “things are better,” and that on the economic level there is an “obvious recovery,” with the employment rate exceeding for the first time the unemployment rate.
