My Number One Is Now Eight

210513090632_2098Eight years have gone by since the great success of 23-year-old then Helena Paparizou, who came first in the 50th Eurovision song contest on May 21, 2005, in Kiev, the day that was also her name day.

My Number One is the 2005 winning song, written by Christos Dantis with English lyrics by Natalia Germanou. The song became a great hit all over Europe.

Greece after a thrilling voting was number one with 230 points, bringing the 51st Eurovision 2006 contest to Greece. My Number One was voted by most of the countries that participated and received the 12 points that led Greece to the top: Belgium, Bulgaria, Hungary, United Kingdom, Turkey, Albania, Cyprus, Serbia, Montenegro, Sweden and Germany.

The song is notable for casting elements of traditional Greek music in a contemporary dance music setting with the sounds of the bouzouki and a solo featuring the Cretan lyre. The lyrics speak of the singer’s appreciation for her lover as “my number one” and “the only treasure I’ll ever have.”
