Papandreou Not Welcome In Edinburgh

unwelcome_real_democracy_524_355The group Real Democracy Now-Edinburg has launched the collection of signatures through the Internet, demanding the removal of former Greek prime minister George Papandreou from the speakers list at the TEDGlobal conference.

Papandreou, who resigned over Greece’s fall into near-bankruptcy and was forced to resign in 2011 after two years of relentless protests, strikes and riots against his government for imposing harsh austerity measures, is set to speak on June 11  about the “lessons from the Greek debt crisis.” He has taken no blame for it.

Real Democracy characterized Papandreou as “an instrumental piece of the political system responsible for the current situation in Greece,” and added that, “This is an insult to those who have learnt the ‘real lessons’ from the crisis. All those who have been stricken by the rise in unemployment, the reduction in pensions, the collapse of public welfare, those forced to emigrate. We will keep fighting for a life of dignity, against the memoranda and the governments who impose them.”

Although still a sitting Member of Parliament and President of Socialist International, Papandreou spends much of his time outside Greece giving lucrative lectures at American Ivy League colleagues and on the speech circuit telling people what went wrong in Greece.
