newego_LARGE_t_1101_54194357_type12128A great number of German tourists choose their holiday destination based on political criteria, according to a German Travel Industry Club’s survey, in which 204 executives of the German tourism industry were asked.

According to the results, the anti-German feeling noted in some countries in South Europe, affects Germans’ choice of summer holiday destination in a negative way.

For example, 87 percent of people asked, believe that Cyprus will lose a great number of German tourists because of the recent anti-German reactions, while 65 percent note that Germans should choose their holiday destination according to the people’s attitude towards Germany.

Germans should send a message of protest or compassion towards the countries they choose, as 87 percent think, while 51 percent states that the choice should not be made on political criteria. Only 34 percent support that Germans will not be welcome in countries with financial crisis.

As far as Cyprus is concerned, only 21 percent believe that the island’s tourism will not be reduced, and 78 percent estimate that the new casinos in the country will have a negative effect on Cyprus’ image as a tourist destination.

The participants in the survey even refer to the danger for the Eurozone’s cohesion due to the gap between the countries of the South and the North. Of those asked, 65 percent detect even the long-term danger of the European Union’s dissolution.
