Bartholomew To Recite Cavafy

bartholomewThe beginning of the four-day pupils conference on the life and work of the great poet Constantine Cavafy, on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of his birth, and 80th of his death, was announced by Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew.

The conference takes place in the historic Zografio Lyceum of Istanbul, with the participation of 13 schools (public and private) from Greece, Cyprus, Egypt and Istanbul. The Zografio Lyceum and Mandoulides are the two institutions to organize the conference, which is held under the auspices of the Ecumenical Patriarchate.

Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew welcomed all guests and wished them success and a good stay.

In 1954 as a student of the Theological School of Halki, he launched a notebook where he used to write poems. Among them  were six poems by Constantine Cavafy. He added that now as a Patriarch he reads Cavafy’s poetry.

According to the conference program, Patriarch Bartholomew will read Thermopylae, on April 13 at the Theological School of Halki.

On April 14 the delegates will worship at the Patriarchal Church of St. George in Fener, where during the liturgy, Bartholomew will officiate.
