Greece Claims German WWII Reparations

spiegelSpiegel cites an extensive report based on the Greek Sunday Press release regarding the German compensation of World War II to Greece.

The German magazine cited an article, Result of the confidential report of Athens: Germany owes Greece Billions in WWII Reparations. Spiegel refers to the journal VIMA’s  report of a panel of experts commissioned by the Greek Finance Ministry, who spent months working on it.

“Still the report is strictly confidential. Soon it could create quite a stir. Within 80 pages a panel of experts is working on the Greek government’s potential claims against Germany for damages. The Athens government, though, hesitate to publish the results,’ Spiegel reports.

Political observers believe that the Greek government avoids confrontation with Germany. Deputy Finance Minister Christos Staikouras said: “Greece considers it an open issue and reserves the right to give a satisfactory solution.”

“The magazine referred to a statement made by a senior government representative of Greece to Spiegel, that “there will be a decision at the highest level concerning the publishing and Samaras will decide it.”

According to Spiegel, the article does not refer to specific amounts, but it is estimated that Germany owes Greece 108 billion euros for the reconstruction of damaged infrastructure and 54 billion for the forced occupation loan. The total amount of 162 billion represents 80% of the current GDP of Greece and, if paid, it would cover most of the country’s debt.

“The German government claims that there is no longer a compensation issue, but the Greek government considers the issue extremely touchy and is afraid it could hurt relations with the most important lender of Europe”, the reporter said and noted that Greeks have a different view on the issue.
