Amnesty International on EU Discrimination Against Roma

561383_10150797284890429_1384353907_n-thumb-mediumOn International Roma Day, April 8, Amnesty International strongly advised the EU to deal with the discrimination against the Roma. The international human rights organization stressed that the European Commission should now take necessary steps to ensure that the race equality directive is respected across the EU.

“The European Union adopted anti discrimination legislation more than a decade ago, but the daily experiences of discrimination against the Roma blatantly reveal that European institutions have failed to translate their commitments and law into equality for one of Europe’s largest ethnic minorities,” Amnesty International said.

In the EU there live about one million Roma, while their number in Greece is about  265,000, 2.5 percent of the total population.

In a report issued on April 8, Amnesty International denounced the discrimination against Roma children, who in some cases have to attend segregated schools. For example, in Greece, France and Romania, only one in ten Roma children manages to finish high school.

In Greece, the Non Profit Organization. Children’s Ark – Greece, founded by Swedish Maria Kratz Larsen, will celebrate the International Roma Day with a children’s party at the Roma settlement near Corinth. Children’s Ark Roma Education runs a preschool in the region and has organized a football team for Roma children.
