Ancient Greek Warship Rams Research

Belgammel-ram-left-side-thumb-600x404-175516Ancient Greek warship rams bring to light new scientific knowledge on the way ancient Greeks made tools and how early in history they had developed this art.

Warships in ancient Greece had big and heavy rams, in order to brake the oars of enemy ships. The ram in the picture, weighs 20 kilos and was discovered 40 years ago.

This ram was the subject of a research conducted at the University of Southampton in the United Kingdom under professor Nic Flemming. The technique of carbon dating was applied to estimate the age of wood contained in this weapon. The test found that the ram was made between 100 BC to 100 AD in the region of Athens.

Throughout the  years, more warship rams have been discovered by archaeologists, and Flemming maintains that research on these tools will reveal a lot about ancient Greek weapon construction.
