Mosaic Showing Eros Found in Turkey

EROTASA mosaic depicting Greek god of Love, Eros, showing him on a horse with a fishing tail, was found in Yumurtalık, Adana Province of Turkey. According to the Turkish news, the discovery was made in a coastal area called Oren by archaeologist Ogia Arslan and her team.

The Adana Museum Directorate has initiated archaeological excavations in the region. A week ago the existence of a villa was determined in the area. It was thought to be owned by a top state official and the Eros mosaic was revealed when a part of the villa was excavated.

After a research in the house, the team revealed the figure, which is made of marble, glass and stone, and possibly belongs to the Late Roman period or early Byzantine period. Yumurtalık Deputy Mayor Erdol Erden said the mosaic was found during a one-week excavation.“We found young and adult Eros figures in the villa. Experts say that these figures were the first and only such figures in the world,” Erden said.
