Skopje Holds Memorial Service For Greece

mnimosino_529_355The annual memorial service for Greece was staged at the Vevcani carnival in Skopje, an event held between Jan. 13-14. Vevcani is one of Europe’s oldest carnivals, spanning 1, 400 years. It’s a carnival of irony that mocks people, companies, organizations and countries.

This year, the people of Vevčani paraded a coffin wrapped with the Greek flag and a tombstone reading Yunanistan 1830-2011, Hell-Ass. Donated by EU.

Last year, the foreign ministry in Athens issued a strong protest against the FYROM government over a mock funeral of Greece. The Ambassador of Greece to Skopje, Alexandra Papadopoulou, also reacted strongly to this incident and asked the government of Skopje to publicly denounce the latest provocations against Greece. She emphasized that such incidents do not help the future development of bilateral relations.

According to the Skopjean state television, the government of the country was represented at the carnival by Deputy Culture Minister, Dragan Nedeljkovic.
