Theodorakis’ Apotheosis in Vienna

theodorakisOn December 14, world-famous composer Mikis Theodorakis was present at the Vienna Konzerthaus, when his longtime friend and colleague Alexandros Karozas, singer Maria Farantouri, the Vienna Chamber Orchestra conducted by Stefan Vladar, and the Vienna Academy of Music performed some of his most important works.

One of the most memorable and touching moments was the ultimate apotheosis from the 2,000 visitors, who gave him a standing ovation while he entered the  concert hall.

Theodorakis has dominated the history of Greece, both politically and musically. With his immense creative genius, he combined poetry with music, set the verses of major Greek poets to music, and wrote symphonies that have become a milestone of classical Greek music. As a pure resistance fighter against the Nazi occupation, the Greek civil war and against the military dictatorship, he gave the Greek people strength and support. With his appeal to the outraged citizens of Greece and Europe he intervenes with his uncompromising conviction in current European debates and warns against the increasing power of the dictatorship of financial markets.

It was the idea of composer Alexandros Karozas, who produced most of the recordings of Theodorakis’ symphonic works, along with Asteris Kutulas, that could encourage Theodorakis to agree with perhaps his last trip abroad. After the overwhelming success of Karozas’  Cavafy Project, which Theodorakis described as a brilliant musical achievement, the two friends met to carry out the concert in Vienna.
