Census Shows 24,361 Greeks in Albania

statistics_population-300x150A census in Albania taken in October, 2011 and released by the Pioneer Minister Gents Polo showed there were 24,361 Greeks in the country’s population of 2,821,977, only about 0.87 percent of the residents. Some 83.2 percent of people were identified as Albanian.

Greek minority representatives called Greeks living in Albania said there were flaws in the calculations. Vaggelis Ntoule, head of KEAD stated that only the 0.5% of the Greek minority in the country participated. Some 14.07% did not answer to the question regarding their nationality.

According to statistics presented by Polo, 99% of people who were asked said that their mother tongue is Albanian, while 57% said they are Muslims, 10.3% Catholic, 6.75% Orthodox and 2.90% Bektashi Muslims
