This year marks the 200th anniversary of the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde (Society of Music Friends in Vienna) and some of the most distinguished artists of classical music will be performing at its Bicentenary. The Society of Music Friends inVienna was founded in 1812.
The name of the society is connected with Nikolaos Doumpas, the Greek-Austrian businessman and patron, who was its Vice-President for many years.
Doumpas has been one of the greatest benefactors of The Academy of Fine Arts Vienna, Fine Arts Federation, Museum of Fine Art. He was also the director of Vienna Art Society and a member of the art council of The Federal Ministry for Education, the Arts and Culture in Austria.
In 2012, concerts at the Society of Music Friends were given over to the Bicentenary celebrations. Some of the star billings included Claudio Abbado and Daniel Barenboim.
